Working to Build a Cutting–Edge Seniors Ministry…It Takes a Village by Dawn Boyd |

Starting January 1, 2011 more than 10,000 Baby Boomers per day will turn 65, a pattern that will continue for the next 19 years. Those of us who are a part of the generation after World War II, born between January 1, 1946 and December 31, 1964, total somewhere between 75 and 78 million, depending on the source. The nation's largest Boomer population, nearly 9 million, is right here in California.
With so many of us becoming "seniors in life," adding our numbers to those who have already reached this milestone, it is imperative that we have a vital Seniors Ministry at SRVUMC. Over the past three years we have laid a solid foundation in this ministry, adding lunches, activities, services and volunteers each year. As we move into 2011 we have the opportunity to do even more with and for our seniors.
Some Baby Boomers and younger adults are already involved as volunteers, but as we look to the future more are needed. I have always believed in the "it takes a village to raise a child" philosophy, and now I think it is also true that "it takes a village to support our seniors."
How might you be a part of this "village endeavor"? Help is needed for our twice-per-month lunches, including set up, cooking, cooking helpers, cleaning up, running the dishwasher, and delivering meals to those who are unable to participate in a lunch. Nurses or others with medical training would allow us to have blood pressure and other health screenings at senior lunches. Transportation for seniors who no longer drive will permit people to participate in worship and attend special events like choir concerts, lunches, and other senior events. Driving on outings gives the driver the experience of attending an event in the City or other location in the company of some interesting and wise people! Sharing experience, expertise, or interests could turn into a program for the Adventuresome Seniors, a seminar, class, or small group.
The time I am with seniors from SRVUMC, whether it is attending a Victorian tea, sharing our faith questions in a small group, cheering on the Giants at a game at AT&T Park, exploring the California Academy of Sciences, or just being together is always time well spent. I learn so much from their life experiences, and I am a better person for these experiences. If you are interested in enhancing your life by spending time in our seniors ministry, I would love to hear from you.
As our population ages, I want SRVUMC to be on the cutting edge of seniors’ ministry. I want this not only for our seniors, but also for those of us who have the opportunity to enhance our lives by being a part of their lives.

Monthly Potlucks
The Adventuresome Seniors enjoy a potluck lunch on the last Tuesday of each month, with varied programs that entertain, educate, and sometimes do both at the same time! Lunch begins at Noon in Wesley Center; programs begin at approximately 12:45.
Senior Outings
Two or three outings each month are planned. Seniors meet at the church and travel together to many spots throughout the Bay Area.
Lunch with Friends
Lunch with Friends is a home-cooked, sit-down lunch for seniors from our church, their friends, & neighbors. $5 helps us cover the cost of the meals. Reservations, at 925-8375243, are requested to help with planning. Lunch is served in Wesley Center at Noon on the first Monday (unless it’s on or close to a holiday) and the third Tuesday. There is no program, but there is great fellowship “with friends.
